Missouri state workers donated more than $1 million to charitable causes for the 14th year in a row in 2017.
The Missouri Office of Administration announced Monday that state workers donated $1.06 million to the Missouri State Employee Charitable Campaign, which disbursed the money to 796 charities in Missouri.
Each year, the campaign provides state employees and retirees with the opportunity to donate to their favorite charities through payroll deductions or one-time gifts.
During the past 33 years, state employees have donated more than $30 million to the annual campaign.
The Missouri Department of Corrections raised more money this year than any other state department, according to a news release from the Office of Administration.
Employees in the governor's office had a 100 percent participation rate. The Missouri State Auditor's office and the Office of Administration set record amounts and raised more money than either office had in previous years.
"The state of Missouri is fortunate to have a workforce that consistently and generously puts the needs of our citizens first by supporting our annual charitable campaign," Office of Administration Commissioner Sarah Steelman said in the news release. "There is no greater mark of human compassion than the willingness of a person to reach out their hand and extend it another in need."
