Iconic hospital site sold

A California historical icon has been purchased.

Landon Worthey and Kenny Branham recently bought the Latham Hospital, 107 E. South St., at the Online Absolute Auction.

Horizons Medical Holdings LLC put the three-story brick, 27,000-square-feet property up for bidding, which closed Dec. 14.

Worthey and Branham bought the half-block property for $11,600.

At this point, the new owners have no immediate plans. They bid to see what would happen and then weigh their options, Worthey said.

"We're in no big hurry; it's paid for," he said.

However, "the hospital part is in pretty bad shape," he said. "The previous owners let it go for so long."

The Finke House is in better condition, he said.

For now, the new owners will clean up the outside and secure the property, he said.

Already, people have approached them about preserving the building, tearing down the building and salvage possibilities.

For families who have lived in Moniteau County for generations, the hospital holds personal memories. For example, many adults today were born there.

And the Finke House, built in the 1880s, about 40 years before the hospital portion was added, retains its character, Worthey said.

"We have mixed emotions," Worthey said, reiterating: "We're in no big hurry; we have no plans. We'll take it as it comes."
