Law officials warn of Monday road closings, traffic issues

During inauguration activities in Jefferson City

Jefferson City police say there will be some parking and street closures due to Monday's inauguration activities, including:

No parking in front of St. Peter Catholic Church on both sides of Broadway.

No parking and street closed on West High Street from Broadway to Jefferson Street.

No parking in the 100 block of Madison Street on both sides, and the street will be closed to traffic.

The Jefferson City Council has authorized free parking on inauguration day, including on-street parking, metered parking and in the Madison Street parking garage.

City JeffTran buses will operate with limited route deviation due to road closures in the downtown area.

"We encourage downtown employees and business owners to park in their regular parking spots, and to leave the customer parking area for customers and visitors," Mayor Carrie Tergin said. "The state is off; so state lots will also be available for parking. We realize that some of our normal spots could be filled with visitors that day. So there will be some shifting around, and our citizens' patience is greatly appreciated."

A map of downtown parking areas can be found online at http://www.midmogis.org/documents/DowntownParking.pdf. Both reserve parking (red hatch) and public lots (green hatch) will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Missouri Highway Patrol officials said anyone going to the Capitol or the Capitol grounds on inauguration day will be subject to security screenings prior to entering the Capitol grounds. Individuals legally in possession of a firearm will be asked to return it to their vehicle prior to any of the inaugural events. Conceal-and-carry permits do not make allowances for entering the Capitol or Capitol grounds. Patrol officials would not confirm the specific security measures they will use but did say they would be in place for any inaugural events.

Inauguration closings

Monday is a state holiday in Cole County because of the inauguration activities.

Gov. Jay Nixon issued an executive order Dec. 23 closing state offices in Cole County - but nowhere else in the state - and noting similar executive orders were issued in 2009 and 2013.

The State Archives, 600 W. Main St., also will be closed. But the Cole County, Jefferson City and federal government offices will remain open, as usual.

The U.S. Postal Service will be open, with normal deliveries and collections - though officials acknowledge access to the Main Post Office, 131 W. High St., could be complicated by the extra traffic associated with the inaugural activities and the closing of West High Street between Broadway and Jefferson streets.

St. Peter Catholic School - just west of the Capitol - will be closed, but Helias High School and the city's two other Catholic elementary schools as well as the Jefferson City Public Schools all will be open as usual.
