New events added to inaugural schedule

While crews from the Office of Administration haul in and set up rows of chairs for Monday's ceremony, employees of Verslues Construction unfurl a large American flag in the south portico. Gov.-elect Eric Greitens' inauguration Monday as Missouri's 56th governor includes both traditional and new events.

It will not include a parade.

State laws set the terms of office for all of the statewide elected officials as "four years beginning at 12:00 noon on the second Monday in January next after their election and until their successors are elected and qualified."

The formal inauguration ceremonies actually will begin about 11:30 a.m. on the state Capitol's South steps with the oaths of office given separately to incoming Attorney General Josh Hawley, Lt. Gov. Mike Parson, Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft and Treasurer Eric Schmitt.

Greitens will take his oath at noon then deliver his inaugural address.

But Monday's events begin before the formal ceremonies:

9 a.m. - Interfaith Prayer Service, St. Peter's Catholic Church.

10 a.m. - Honor our Missouri Heroes with a reception in the Capitol Rotunda - A recognition of Missourians who have made great impact or sacrifices in their respective fields.

This is a new event. Senior advisor Austin Chambers told reporters late last month: "That (is) a key part of the theme of our inauguration - it's the heart of Missouri, and it's the salute to service.

"And we felt like that was more important than a parade."

11:30 a.m. - Swearing-in ceremonies begin on the Capitol's South steps.

Noon - Greitens will be sworn in as Missouri's new governor.

1 p.m. - Formation of the Troops, Capitol's North steps. As Missouri's commander-in-chief, Greitens will review the Missouri National Guard and Missouri Highway Patrol.

This is also a new event.

1:30 p.m. - Receiving line at the Governor's Mansion, with Greitens and First Lady Sheena Greitens greeting members of the public.

3 p.m. - Public Hospitality Reception, Capitol Plaza Hotel. Described as "a place to get warm before the Inaugural Ball."

7 p.m. - Salute to Service Inaugural Ball in the Capitol Rotunda, "a celebration and culmination of the Inauguration."
