The five members of the California Street Department kept on the job, spreading salt where needed, although traffic was light due to requests that people stay off the roads as much as possible.
The snowplows remained unneeded as it neared 5 p.m., but expectations of continuing freezing rain is thought to cause deterioration of road conditions through the night and into Saturday morning.
The supermarkets reported a run on many items most of the day Friday, with the bread shelves being almost bare by 5 p.m. At least one of the markets planned to close three hours earlier than normal.
