Probation ordered in bomb threat hoax

A Russellville man has been placed on one year of court-supervised probation after pleading guilty to an amended charge in connection with a bomb threat at a Jefferson City business in January 2016.

Maxi Sturgis, 53, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor peace disturbance. He had been charged with making a false bomb report, which is a felony.

Officers were contacted about an employee of a business on Maytag Drive who came into work and placed a box in an office, alluding the box contained a bomb, according to Jefferson City police reports. Sturgis then made derogatory comments about an employee and left the building, causing representatives of the company to contact police.

Sturgis then walked into the police department on Monroe Street and was interviewed by detectives, who eventually took him into custody without incident.

The business was evacuated and it was determined the package in question was safe, consisting of fireworks and related materials but labeled as dynamite.
