Debris from the burned duplex at 903 Nichols St. is piled right across the road from 906 Nichols St., which was damaged in a Monday fire. The two incidents are unrelated, Fire Chief Kevin Coffelt said.

While unusual, the two recent fires in the 900 block of Nichols Street aren't suspicious, according to Fulton Fire Chief Kevin Coffelt.

"It was pretty odd, but we don't feel that they're connected at all," he said Wednesday.

The first fire occurred July 14 at 903B Nichols St., and resulted in the death of Steven Rives, 67. The second occurred Monday at 906 Nichols St., with occupants escaping unharmed, according to Fulton Fire Department press releases.

The 906 Nichols St. blaze was ruled accidental as a result of smoking materials left on the screened porch, Coffelt said. But the cause of the first fire remains uncertain.

"Actually, we're still waiting on toxicology and a full autopsy on that," Coffelt said. "We have not determined or announced a cause yet."

However, officials do not believe it was arson. "We do not suspect any foul play," Coffelt said, adding he'll announce the fire's cause once results are available.
