The Republican effort to keep Missouri's 50th Legislative District in GOP hands brought about 50 members of the party faithful to the California Nutrition Center on Friday for a meet and greet with Republican candidate Sara Walsh.

Walsh, 38, is hoping to succeed Caleb Jones, who stepped down as state representative earlier this year to accept a position as deputy chief of staff in the administration of Gov. Eric Greitens. A special election is scheduled for Aug. 8.

"Momentum is building with each event we hold in California and throughout the district," said Walsh. "The good citizens I have the privilege of meeting and visiting with share their concerns about jobs, good schools, and their desire to have a representative in Jefferson City who believes as they do in common sense values."

The 50th District includes parts of Moniteau, Cole, Cooper, and Boone counties. Walsh has been going door to door throughout the district, meeting citizens and hearing a common concern. Many people are fed up with what they perceive as government overreach.

"Over-regulation, at both the state and federal levels, is frustrating people," said Walsh. "They want a state representative who will fight to keep big government off the backs of small businesses and everyday people. I will be their representative."

The event drew several of Moniteau County's political figures, past and present, including state Rep. David Wood, Presiding Commissioner Kenneth Kunze, Collector Sarah Jones, former state Sen. Larry Rohrbach, and Caleb Jones, whose departure from the General Assembly set the campaign wheels in motion.

Walsh's opponent in the August special election is Democrat Michela Skelton.
