Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday, March 12, so be sure to change your clocks.

Time "springs ahead" by an hour at 2 a.m. Sunday.

This year, as every year since 1966, the clocks are turned forward an hour in the spring and set back an hour in the fall for Daylight Saving Time. The time change is an attempt to shift work and other activity of residents by an hour for more daylight. For 2017, Daylight Saving Time begins the second Sunday in March and ends the first Sunday in November.

The time change is also the time recommended for changing batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, and to make certain those detectors have functioning batteries in place.

California City Fire Chief Allen Smith said it's easy to remember to change batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors if they are changed at the same time the clocks are changed. Although most buildings have smoke detectors, Smith said firefighters often find the detectors nonfunctional - with either dead batteries or no batteries.

By a California City ordinance, effective in December 2000, all residential rental units are required to have smoke detectors provided by the owner. The resident is responsible for maintenance of the smoke detector. A form to be signed by both owner and renter indicating compliance with the ordinance is available at the California Fire Department or the California City Hall.
