Fire damages Jefferson City home

The Jefferson City Fire Department responded to reports of a deck on fire in the 200 block of Dunford Street at 8:56 p.m. Monday.

According to the department, a neighbor reported the blaze. Upon arrival, fire units found a large amount of fire coming from the rear of the building and smoke coming from the front of the building. Firefighters confirmed there was no one inside.

Fire was brought under control within 20 minutes, but firefighters remained on the scene for four hours investigating and ensuring the fire was out. 

The home sustained significant fire damage to its back one-third, and there was smoke damage throughout. No fire damage was sustained by neighboring houses.

The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the family with temporary shelter and emergency provisions.

One occupant received minor injuries and chose not to seek medical treatment. Two birds were rescued from the building and are secure with the owners, the department reports. 

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
