Jury finds inmate guilty in rape case

A man currently in the Missouri Department of Corrections has been found guilty in a Cole County rape case.

A Cole County jury found Bobby Bishop, 41, guilty of first-degree statutory rape and first-degree statutory sodomy. The jury came back with the verdict Thursday after a trial that lasted most of the week.

Authorities were contacted at the beginning of November 2016 about this case, according to a Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement.

A witness told investigators that between November 2014 and March 2015 she and the victim, a girl under age 14, were in an abusive situation with Bishop.

During a forensic interview at a facility in Columbia, the victim disclosed that Bishop had sexual intercourse with her.

When interviewed by authorities, Bishop denied having any sexual contact with the victim, but did say it was "probable" that he had the witness examine the victim for signs of sexual assault.

Bishop has been serving time in the Department of Corrections for a domestic assault conviction.

Sentencing will occur at a later date.
