With sports on the television, a comfy sofa to sit on and a popcorn machine filling the room with the fresh, buttery smell, Beards and Shears Barber Shop has opened with a more modern flare for California.

Kelsay Ennis discovered while working at the chain, Sport Clips, that she enjoyed the sporting atmosphere and preferred to work on men's hair.

Completing barber school in August, she is straight razor-ready, looking to draw a strong walk-in business at the 205 W. Buchanan St. location.

"I wanted to bring something more upscale to my hometown," Ennis said.

Ennis first earned her cosmetology license in 2009. After staying home for a few years with her children, she decided it was time to get back into the business.

She is originally from Jamestown, but has lived the last five years in California.

She will cut men's, women's and children's hair.

Men's treatments include a hot steam towel, tea tree shampoo, a beard trim and oil, and eyebrow waxing.

"I don't want people to feel they have to drive to Jefferson City or Columbia to get high-end service."

Walk-in customers will sign their names to the chalk board and then may enjoy the amenities until it's their turn.

She intends to have soda and peanuts available to customers as they wait. And children will enjoy the miniature basketball goal.

Ennis said she also would like to provide donuts and coffee on Saturday mornings.

"I want it to feel relaxed, fun and laid back," she said. "I want them to enjoy getting a haircut instead of it feeling like a chore."
