ASHLAND, Mo. -- A $4.8 million bond issue to build a new elementary school gymnasium was approved by a wide margin Tuesday in the Southern Boone R-1 School District.
The issue passed 869-288.
Southern Boone's elementary and primary schools sit in two adjacent buildings with one housing kindergarten through second-graders and the other housing third- through fifth-graders. Before the vote, Superintendent Chris Felmlee said the school district is growing at a rate of about 50-70 students per year.
In 2016, voters approved a $7.5 million bond measure to build four new classrooms in the elementary school, eight new classrooms and a new gym at the primary school. Before the 2016 bond issuance, the primary school served lunch and physical education classes in the same space. The elementary school currently holds both lunch and physical education classes in its gymnasium.
New school board members
Southern Boone voters also filled two three-year terms on the school board. Three candidates sought the two seats.
Elected to the board were Joseph Miller, 646 votes, and Kristopher Harmon, 594 votes. Coming in third was George Carney, with 592 votes.
