Meeting to discuss US 54 safety concerns

The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting this month to present proposed safety improvements along U.S. 54 in Camden County.

The public meeting will be held from 4-6 p.m. Jan. 30 in the City Council chambers of Osage Beach City Hall, 1000 Osage Beach Parkway. No formal presentation will be made, but MoDOT staff will be available to explain project details and answer questions, according to a news release.

The proposed project is designed to increase safety at the intersections located between Cecil Street in Camdenton and Route KK in Osage Beach: Route A, Spring Valley Road, Runabout Drive and Key Largo Road.

J-turn movements are proposed for the Route A, Cape Wood, Spring Valley Road, Runabout Drive and Key Largo Road intersections. Under the proposal, a J-turn will be placed west of Route KK and east of Key Largo Road to serve Spring Valley, Runabout and Key Largo. The Spring Valley and Runabout medians will be closed. The Route A intersection is proposed to be modified with two J-turns, one in each direction.

The project also calls for installing guard cable along U.S. 54 between Cecil Street in Camdenton and Route KK in Osage Beach.

The guard cable placement was one of the recommendations from a road safety audit performed in 2016 that examined wrong-way, cross-median and curve crashes on U.S. 54 from Camdenton to Mexico. Some safety measures have been put in place in the lake area as a result of the audit. Additional "Wrong Way" and "Do Not Enter" signs have been put up, and the curve near the intersection of U.S. 54 and Route Y near Big Surf has been treated with high-friction surface treatment to provide motorists with more traction in slick conditions.
