The California Area Chamber of Commerce will help provide a 9/11 commemoration this year.

David Wyatt, manager at the local Sonic, requested the chamber's support at its regular meeting June 14. A long-time firefighter, Wyatt said other communities where he has served have held some sort of event acknowledging the heroism of the emergency responders during the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

As a first-time event, Wyatt said he hopes to bring together rural and city fire departments, as well as the community, at California City Hall the morning of the anniversary to give tribute to the fallen firefighters and to recognize the personal sacrifices of area firefighters.

"For me, it's all about remembering the firefighters," Wyatt said.

In other business, the chamber board:

  • Praised the turnout for the recent ribbon cutting at Grind coffee shop.
  • Acknowledged the annual golf tournament's success, earning about $3,000 with 25 teams participating.
  • Discussed the need for new membership stickers for 2019.
  • Donated $100 to the Moniteau County Alliance for Kids, which provides the annual back-to-school Fair.
  • Learned that the Porsche Club of America will use Proctor Park as a stop during its tours at 9 a.m.-1 p.m., July 10-13, from Lake of the Ozarks to Warm Springs Ranch.
  • An update was given on the Ozark Ham and Turkey Festival planning, including the addition of a bicycle parade and the search for entertainment for the stages.
