Aldermen discuss police chief position

The matter of applicants for the position of California Police Chief was discussed at a special meeting held the evening of June 25 in the Council Chambers.

According to Mayor Norris Gerhart, 16 individuals have made application for the police chief position. The Board of Aldermen met over concern that insufficient information was provided to the applicants for the position. After discussion, the board decided to contact all applicants and inform them of several conditions, which could have an effect on whether they remain interested in the office.

The applicants are to be informed of the salary, where the new chief is required to reside and the benefits. The salary for the position is $47,000. The chief must reside inside the California city limits and will have 90 days to relocate unless already residing in the city limits.

Interviews will be scheduled for those applicants who agree to these conditions by the June 29 deadline.

In other business, the aldermen approved those who are allowed to sign on behalf of the city. They are Mayor Norris Gerhart, Board President Pro-tem Resa Dudley and city clerk Amy Hill.

Also discussed was compliance with the revised city ordinances. It was determined that some of the ordinance violations on file with the city attorney are outdated and should be redone.

Also discussed was the need for work to be done to repair one unoccupied business in the downtown area, which has an outdoor deck in dilapidated condition.
