Jefferson City man placed on 5 years probation for stealing

A Jefferson City man has been placed on five years of court-supervised probation for pleading guilty to stealing scrap metal from a local business in March 2014.

David Johnson, 52, was charged with one count of felony stealing.

As part of his probation, Cole County Judge Dan Green ordered Johnson pay $896.35 in restitution.

Employees at Al Scheppers Motor Company on Southridge Drive heard a loud noise coming from the outside of the building, according to a Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement. The employees saw a tan van leaving the area. The van was driven by Johnson and was carrying items from the business.

An employee of the business located the stolen items at a recycling business in Cole County.

While all this was taking place, Johnson returned to the recycling business and was taken into custody.

The items stolen were valued at around $1,000.

Johnson denied taking the items, saying he had found them in Holts Summit.

He has prior convictions for first-degree assault, felony stealing, narcotics and resisting arrest. At the time of his arrest he was wanted on a warrant from New Florence for failure to appear on a criminal charge.
