The Moniteau County Library summer reading program is underway. The program promises a summer of fun for children, at the same time motivating them to keep up their reading skills until school begins in the fall with "Rock Out with Reading."

The first of the weekly programs were presented May 21 at Jamestown and High Point schools. It went to Latham school May 22. Also, it was the first of the Tween programs, which are held at 6:30 p.m. each Tuesday at the library.

In addition to the school programs, the library staff will serve eight area daycare facilities and California Head Start at their locations.

At the library, there will be five Day Camp groups and two evening programs for the public. This year's summer reading program will serve infants through eighth graders. Preschool story times will be held at 10:30 a.m. each Wednesday, beginning today.

Separate programs will be held for infants, toddlers, and 3-5-year-olds. Activities are age-appropriate and are planned using the five "Racing to Read" principles - Love Books, Talk and Read, Tell Stories, Play with Letters, and Sing and Rhyme.

The beginning and independent reader programs will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays, starting tomorrow, upstairs at the library.

This program is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act through a grant administered by the Missouri State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State.

The students at Jamestown, High Point and Latham schools are registered for the summer program. Registration for all other readers will started May 14. Summer hours began May 21 to accommodate the evening programs. The library will be open 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday until Aug. 3. The library also is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Complete information about the program will be in the reading log, as well as on the library web page. For more information call 573-796-2642.
