A 2012 Volvo VNL is towed away after rear ending a California man driving a backhoe.

A California man was injured seriously when the backhoe he was driving was rear-ended by a tractor trailer at 3:37 p.m. Jan. 4 on U.S. 50 West near Mockingbird Road.

"This tractor-trailer rear-ended the backhoe, the backhoe was going down the right lane of the highway," State Trooper Blake Deffenwanger said on the scene.

Rafael Magana, 30, California, was driving a 2010 Caterpillar backhoe when the vehicle was hit by a 2012 Volvo truck driven by Qutayba Murad Abu Farsakh, 28, Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Magana was taken to St. Mary's Hospital, Jefferson City.

Farsakh was taken to University Hospital, Columbia,

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported the Volvo was totaled and extensive damage was done to the Caterpillar.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts.
