Spring cleaning can be a challenge when it comes to getting rid of unwanted items. It's about to get easier for California residents when the sanitation department holds its annual residential cleanup week April 8-12.

At 6 a.m. that week, sanitation workers will begin picking up large items, such as appliances, furniture and brush, left on the curb.

On Monday, crews will visit the northeast section of town. On Tuesday, the northwest part of town will be serviced. Crews will visit the southwest sector on Wednesday and the southeast part on Thursday. On Friday, crews will revisit all areas.

Brush may be up to 4 inches in diameter and 4 feet long. Residents are asked to make sure old lumber or metal is cut into 4-foot lengths then cut into bundles. Smaller items are to be placed in boxes or trash bags.

Crews won't be picking up leaves, grass clippings, yard waste, rocks and bricks, concrete, hazardous or flammable household liquids, unclean paint cans and any automobile parts.

Yard waste may be taken to the compost site north of California on Route O. California residents are asked to observe the rules at the compost site and not dump other items at the site.
