Centertown parks seeking community board members

In order for the village of Centertown to develop its city park and begin developing a children's park, Kenny Herkleman needs more community members to come forward.

"We're trying to get a board together," Herkleman said. "We haven't gotten enough people interested in being on the board, so we can't do anything. We've got people interested in helping, but we don't have anybody to make the decisions."

Herkleman, who is chairman of the non-existent board, said members of a former park committee relocated or lost interest.

A recommended five-person board would develop plans for updates to the park off Monroe Street and hold monthly meetings.

The city park has a baseball field and a pavilion for gatherings. Herkleman said there is interest in adding a trail to the wooded area.

Members would also help identify a proposed location for the children's park. Herkleman said some land is available on Mill Street and Route NN. The city also owns property at the intersection of Broadway and Main streets.

Last year, Cruising Crowes Parts and Accessories held a benefit ride and raised $352.03 specifically for parks. Owners Mike and Theresa Hedrick attend the city and park board meetings.

"We want one (a children's park), and we want to develop it into a unique area," Theresa Hedrick said. "It's a safe environment around here. There is community interest; it's getting the people out there."

The village is organizing a citywide garage sale from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. May 18 to raise more funds.

"If we can have the garage sale and make a little bit of money, we are going to figure out what we can buy and put at the little area across from the Baptist church," Herkleman said.

City officials said some ideas include a park bench, flowers or small equipment.

A 10-by-10-foot spot at the garage sale is $10. The deadline to confirm a reservation is Thursday. Those interested in the garage sale or joining the park board may call Herkleman at 573-415-6518.
