United Church of Christ, California, was transformed into a fair and marketplace with scenes from around the world as 164 people attended the Globetrotter Fair Thursday, Aug. 11.
The fair, which was the Wood Place Public Library's Summer Reading Program's end of summer program, featured 13 booths of games and activities in addition to the Globetrotter's Market. The fair and market kept with the Summer Reading Program theme of "One World, Many Stories," in which the children traveled to 11 worldwide locations through books, programs and crafts.
At the market and fair children were able to use the tickets they earned during the summer on games, books and other reading and world themed items.
There were three reading levels during the Summer Reading Program: Family reader; Independent Reader and Tween/Teen Reader. The suggested goal for the Family Reader was five books per week for 11 weeks. The Family Reader would earn a 25-cent ticket for each book read or listened to. For the Independent Reader, the suggested goal was to read 15 minutes five times a week for 11 weeks. This group earned a 25-cent ticket for each 15 minutes read. The Tween/Teen readers were challenged to read 1500 pages during 11 weeks and they earned a 25-cent ticket for each 50 pages read. The 78 Family and Independent Readers attended the Fair and spent a total of $2,110.50 in tickets. Members spent $1,179.50 shopping at the market and another $931 on games, activities and food.
