Cooling stations available in California area

As the heat of the summer remains, with temperatures in the high 80's and 90's, at times reaching 100 degrees or more, be sure to check on the health and safety of your friends, neighbors and relatives, especially those who may be more elderly.

Drinking plenty of water is important to remaining healthy in times of high heat as is staying out of the direct sunlight, seeking cooler areas, or air conditioned premises during the heat of the day.

The California Nutrition Center, 107 West Versailles Avenue, is available as a cooling station as is the Wood Place Public library just around the corner on Oak Street.

The nutrition center is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The facility, designed for adults 60 or older, always has a puzzle table, and a quilting area, as well as a library section. Lunch is served daily for a small donation. For information, call 573-796-4240.

The public library is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. In addition to books, tapes, CDs and DVDs, the library also offers computers with Internet access.
