California letter carriers will collect nonperishable food items May 14

Letter carriers across the nation, including carriers from the California Post Office, are ready to help stock community food banks, pantries and shelters for the summer months.

"Preventing hunger in America is as easy as going to the mailbox," said Postmaster Krystal Barnes, Postmaster, letter carriers will collect the nonperishable food items you leave at your mailbox on Saturday, May 14 during the 19th annual NALC National Food Drive.

"Figures show that the number of Americans living in homes lacking sufficient food topped 50 million in 2009," Barnes said, "with one in three of those-17.2 million-a child.

"Sadly, that represents a 30 percent increase in just one year." she said. "No doubt many of us have seen the evidence of this every day on our routes."

Barnes encourages residents to support this year's food drive. "Your donations mean so much to those who are struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table. Simply leave a box, sack, or can of non-perishable food near your mailbox for your letter carrier to pick up. The food will be delivered to local food banks and pantries that serve the area where the food is collected."
