California Elementary School watched Principal Terri Steffes get "punked" at an assembly to promote the African Library Project (ALP).
On March 31, at a previous ALP assembly, Steffes said, in front of ALP founder Chris Bradshaw, she would do this if the students, both elementary and middle school, raised over 1,000 books to open another library in Africa. The two schools raised 1,360 books, so as promised Steffes became a punk rocker.
Matt Abernathy, principal at the middle school, also joined in on the efforts to promote, he not only shaved his head, but also completely shaved his goatee off, which hasn't been shaved in over 15 years.
California Elementary/Middle School teachers Nicki Kelley, Jill Meisenheimer and Heidi Loring organized the event and collect books year round for the ALP. This is the third library the California School Distict has been able to start just this year with a selection of over 1,000 books. The school district has created 10 libraries in four years.
They ask If anyone has any gently used books they are willing to donate for the ALP, to please let one of the organizers know and they will gladly accept any donations.
