Postal patrons discuss proposed closings

November 8th, 2011 in News

A presentation concerning the closing of small area post offices drew about 20 postal patrons to Nic Nac Cafe on Tuesday, Nov. 1.

Steven Vanderhoof, retired Marshall postmaster, and member of the national Association of Postmasters of the U.S., presented information about steps to take if the small post office is on a list to be studied for closing.

He agreed that the U.S. Postal Service is having financial problems, he explained a post office can't legally be closed simply because it is not making any money. The Postal Service has tried to go to five-day delivery, which would save a lot of money, but the U.S. Congress has always blocked it. In fact, Vanderhoof said going to five-day delivery would save more than closing 30 percent of the small post offices.
