California Students Attend Missouri Leadership Seminar

California Students Attend Missouri Leadership Seminar

October 11th, 2011 by Taron Morris, CHS Reporter in News

Every year the University of Central Missouri hosts an event for students from Missouri, called the Missouri Leadership Seminar (MLS). This past summer sophomores Dakota Harris and Audrey Imhoff were the two delegates from

CHS. In order to get nominated for MLS, they had to write a 100-word essay and fill out an application. Then, the California committee selects a candidate. They look for someone who shows leadership skills and will take the most out of this experience.

MLS takes place during the first week in June. While at MLS, they learn a variety of things. The main objective of this event is to teach people how to become good voters and teach people how to break out of their shell to try something new.

A special honor was bestowed on Dakota Harris. Out of 154 kids from across Missouri, he was the sole recipient of the High Flyer award. The award recognized Dakota's ability to stand out in a crowd.

When asked what his favorite part of the event was, he said "getting to know 154 new people and experiencing something that most people don't get the chance to do."

Harris hopes to go next year as a group adviser, which is something Senior Lacey Thompson did this year as well. Lacey Thompson attended MLS her sophomore year, and junior year, and hopes to go back again.
