Fifteen California High School students participated in a speech competition at Smith Cotton on Saturday, Oct. 15, bringing home a fourth place finish.
Students competed in nine different categories: poetry, prose, humorous interpretation, dramatic interpretation, storytelling, radio, extemporaneous speaking, duet acting and improvisational duet acting.
In this first competition of the year, several California students took home prizes.
Kassi Meisenheimer took fifth in the poetry and humorous interpretation and fourth in dramatic interpretation. Maria Banda won seventh in poetry and humorous interpretation and fifth in the dramatic interpretation. In duet acting Sarah Couchman and Ashlee Davis took fifth and Sarah Hurt and Rebecca Porter took sixth. In improvisational duet acting, Sarah Couchman and Sarah Hurt took third, Kim Summey and Kristen Dummermuth took fifth place, and Alex Davis and Nathaniel Caudel took sixth.
This was the first competition our speech team has competed in this year.
"I was very pleased to have 10 out of our 15 competitors score well enough to make it to finals," said Coach Tiffany Brown.
The next speech competition will be in Stover, Friday, Nov. 3.
