Cole County R-1 School Board Holds Tax Rate Hearing/School Board Meeting

The special board meeting for the Tax Rate Hearing to establish the tax levy for the 2011-12 school year was held Thursday, Aug. 18, at 6:15 p.m. Jerry Hobbs, Cole R-I School District superintendent, provided the necessary documents for review and comment.

There were no questions asked by those in attendance. The Board voted to set the tax levy for Fund 1 (Operating Levy) at $3.2353. The Board voted to set the tax levy for Fund 3 (Debt Service) at $0.8800 after rolling back the tax rate from $1.2259. The total levy for the 2011-12 school year is $4.1153. The hearing closed at 6:30 p.m.

The Cole County R-1 School Board then held its regular monthly meeting. The Board adopted the agenda. The administrators presented their reports and moved on to the consent agenda. Under new business, the Board voted to approve the consent

agenda as presented and a payroll fund transfer of $59,000.

James Stark and Chris Hart presented an update on the track project. Twehous is still a week and a half ahead of schedule and progressing very well. The inside curb for the track is complete now, which will allow them to pave the track in the next few weeks. Most of the sewer and concrete work is done as well.

The Energy Performance Project is 95 percent complete. This project should be complete in the next couple of weeks.

Hobbs presented information about a Tornado Safe Room FEMA Grant to the Board for information purposes only at this time. It is a 75 percent/25 percent match with the Federal Government paying 75 percent of the cost of the building. The Board decided to table this issue until a later date.

The Board voted to declare bus 16 and three as surplus property. In

addition, the metal halide lights, furniture and various other items

were declared as surplus property. An auction will be held at a later

date.

The Board voted to approve the bread bid by Interstate Bread as

presented.

In closed session, the Board voted to employ Carol Chandler as a nurse/office assistant at the high school. They also hired Robert Hegerfeld as a part-time bus mechanic.

The next Cole R-I School Board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 15.
