There were several post office "discontinuance study" meetings held Tuesday, Sept. 13. The meeting at the McGirk Community Building drew 18 postal patrons who expressed their opinions of the need to keep the local post office open.
"This is a study of the possibility of discontinuance of the McGirk post office," said Cindy Bolles, representing the postal service. "I'm the messenger not the decision maker."
According to Bolles, consideration is being given to closing several small post offices in central Missouri. Bolles met with postal patrons at 10 small post offices on Tuesday, including several in Moniteau County. She said that even if a post office is set to be closed, it takes a minimum of 138 days to actually close it.
Although rural mail delivery service will continue, there may be some significant changes. Some of the rural mail delivery services will be operated out of larger post offices, such as California, rather than smaller ones such as Latham or Clarksburg.
