CHS Art Club paints for summer reading program

The CHS art club will be meeting after school this week to work on cardboard cutout paintings for the Wood Place Public Library's Summer Reading Program.

The reading program has been put on since 1999 at the library when it was moved to its current location on Oak Street.

Several years later, the program has become a very rewarding, exciting program for the community and especially librarian Connie Walker.

"It''s so rewarding to see kids react in a positive way to the programming and incentives we have created for them," Walker said.

The library approached the CHS art club about painting the cut outs. The club also participated in painting for the library last year.

"We believe with art club involved, we are assured of outstanding decoration," said Walker. Also, this is a chance for the art club to share their talents with Moniteau County.

The members will be meeting with pizza and drinks to draw and cut out the cardboard shapes. This years Summer Reading theme is Dream Big Read!, and the club is painting objects such as rockets, campgrounds and the solar system.

The purpose of the program and the cut outs is to draw kids into reading and to open their imaginations.

"I hope that above all, kids will have a positive experience at the library, and therefore make it a place they want to return to again and again. I hope that we instill a love for reading not only to gain knowledge, but for entertainment as well, " Walker also stated.

Sign up for the program begins May 24 and continues for two weeks. The cut outs will be displayed for the duration of the program.
