Use Tax a ballot possibility

The possibility of a putting a Use Tax on the local ballots was discussed at the MRED (Moniteau County Regional Economic Development Committee) meeting on Wednesday,

Dec. 12.

Presiding County Commissioner Kenny Kunze said the county plans to put a Use Tax on the April ballot. It would have to be submitted by Jan. 22.

According to information found on the Internet, a use tax is an excise tax on items purchased which might otherwise be taxfree because of purchase out-ofstate or over the Internet. A use tax applies when sales tax has not been charged and is usually assessed at the same rate as a sales tax which would have applied if the purchase had been made in the state.

Those purchases made via Internet or out-of-state are the most common transactions a use tax is applied to.

Kunze, California Mayor Norris Gerhart, Tipton Mayor Jennifer Cary and Tipton city council member Mike Kelly discussed meeting in January for the purpose of combining efforts of the county and cities to educate the voting public as to the need for a use tax locally.
