Max Duane Howard, 79, of Centertown, died on Friday, March 16, 2012, at his residence in Centertown, Mo.

He was born on March 26, 1932 in Bado, Mo., the son of William W. and Marion C. (Wendt) Howard both of whom preceded him in death. He was married on December 20, 1953 at Clara, Mo., to Sippie Georgina Amick who survives of the home.

Mr. Howard was a United States Navy veteran. He was a 1949 graduate of Cabool High School and a graduate of Southwest Missouri State University. He was a member of the Centertown Baptist Church where he was ordained as a Deacon but at the time of his passing he was a member of the First Baptist Church, Jefferson City, and a member of NARFE. Mr. Howard enjoyed reading, playing solitaire and Skipbo, fast food, and flying which prompted him to get his pilot's license.

He is survived by one daughter, Virginia L. Yacko and her husband David, Rocky Point, New York; two brothers, A.W. Howard, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Carl Howard, Atlanta, Texas; two grandchildren, Jonathan Yacko, Rocky Point, New York, and Amanda Pouyat, Charleston, South Carolina; one great-granddaughter, Sandra Paige Pouyat. He is preceded in death by one son, Steven Max Howard; three sisters; and one brother.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Jefferson City. Officiating was Dr. Doyle Sager.

James D. (Fireball) Jenkins, 78, of Slater, Mo., died Sunday, March 18, 2012, at Landmark Hospital in Columbia, Mo.

Born June 5, 1933, in Hardin, Mo., he was the son of the late Rollie Henry (Mike) Jenkins and Helen Frances Hearrold Jenkins. On November 1, 1980, he married Lois Wood Hickman who survives of the home.

He had lived in Slater most of his life and retired from the Local 7688 United Mine Workers in 1992. He owned and operated Jenkins Hauling from 1994 to 2008 when he retired. He started his 31-year racing career in 1961 and spent many weekends racing on Friday nights at Moberly and Jefferson City and Sunday night in Marshall. He raced in Indiana, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Arkansas, Texas and North Dakota. He was points champion a few years at Capital Speedway and points champion in the B Class for two years at Sportsman's Speedway before moving up a class. One of his biggest accomplishments was winning the B feature at the Knoxville Nationals in 1964.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by seven children, Sheryl Sneed and companion Keith of Omaha, Neb., James L. Jenkins and wife SuzAnne of Slater, Janie Adcock-McCoy and companion Richard Wiseman of Marshall, Jerry Jenkins and wife Debbie of Columbia, Mo., Steven Hickman and wife Brenda of California, Mo., Mike Hickman and wife Cathy of California, Mo., and Kelli Dorsey and husband Donnie of Hannibal, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Pat White of Slater, and Carol King of Odessa, Mo.; three brothers, Ed Jenkins and Tom Jenkins both of Odessa and Jack Jenkins of Bremerton, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Steven; one brother, Rollie (Dude) Jenkins; and stepmother, Glenna Jenkins.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 23, 2012, at First Baptist Church in Slater, with Rev. Bruce Hess and William W. Harlow officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Marshall. Burial will be in Slater City Cemetery.

WARD

Mary L. Ward, 88, of California, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at Moniteau Care Center California, Missouri.

She was born on November 13, 1923 in Clarksburg, Missouri, to J. Warren and Olive (Groom) Birdsong.

For 25 years, Mary taught at Martin City School in the Grandview School District. She was an avid reader and enjoyed working in her yard with her flowers.

Mary is survived by: one son, Donald Ward, with his wife Nita, of Ft. Madison, Iowa; two granddaughters, Mary Ward and Anna Ward; three brothers, Paul Birdsong, with his wife Jessie, of Clarksburg, Dean Birdsong, with his wife LaVern, of Clarksburg and Max Birdsong, with his wife Pat, of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; two sisters, Sarah Margaret Donley, with her husband James, of California, Mo., and Betty Mann, with her husband Bob, of Irvine, California.

She was preceded in death by: her husband Albert L. Ward, and one daughter Anita Ward.

Funeral services were held at Windmill Ridge Funeral Chapel on Saturday, March 17, at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Greg Morrow officiating. Interment was at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
