Area athletes shine at state track meet; California's Deeken snags top honors

California's Sydney Deeken gets set to take off in the Triple Jump event at the 2012 State Track Championships Friday at Dwight T. Reed Stadium, Jefferson City.

The 2012 State Track and Field Championships were held Friday and Saturday at Dwight T. Reed Stadium, Jefferson City, where area athletes from California, Russellville and Jamestown finished in the top eight of their event (in a field of 16 competitors) to earn All-State honors.

California sophomore Sydney Deeken won two events (and had a second place finish as well) to become the first two-time winner for the Lady Pintos. Deeken won the Triple Jump with 36'8 3/4", and the High Jump with 5'4". She finished the Long Jump in second place with 17'1 1/2". (Deeken won the High Jump at last year's state championships, and placed third in the Triple Jump and fourth in the Long Jump.)

The California girls placed fifth place as a team with 28 points, all from Deeken.

"I believe Sydney scored more points than any female athlete at the meet," California Coach Rick Edwards said. "To accomplish that against the best competition in the state is unbelievable."
