Memorial Day closings and special activities

The offices of Moniteau County, the City of California and the California Democrat will be closed Monday, May 28, for the observance of Memorial Day. Additional closings include Central Bank, Commerce Bank and People's Bank.

Area activities are scheduled for California, Tipton and Centertown on Memorial Day weekend.

In California at 10 a.m., Memorial Day services will be held in the Masonic Cemetery at the grave of Billy Potter. The observance is the result of a long tradition of California Jobe-Elliott VFW Post 4345 and California Masonic Lodge 183 in which tribute is paid to veterans who have served their country and the Masonic fraternity.

In Centertown, the American Legion will place the Memorial Wreath at the Memorial Marker at 9 a.m.

In Tipton, Mass will be held at 7:30 a.m. at St. Andrew Cemetery. At 10 a.m., Memorial Day services will be held at the grave of Edgar Cole in the Masonic Cemetery with members of the American Legion in attendance. Veterans are requested to be present 30 minutes early. Cole was Tipton's first casualty of World War I. American Legion Edgar Cole Post 304, Tipton, is named in his honor.
