Interviews in progress for ColeR-I Basketball coach

Interviews are in progress for a 2012-2013 boys basketball coach for the Cole R-1 School District.

Practices are set to begin Oct. 29 in advance of the first games of the season, played at the Eugene High School Invitational Tournament.

Scott White had been hired in May as the head boys basketball coach. However, he is on administrative leave and his court hearing isn't until Nov. 9.

"We've got to get conditioning going," said Superintendent Jerry Hobbs.

So a replacement, who is not required to be a teacher in the district, will receive the $3,443 head coach stipend this school year.

The school has had a losing season in boys basketball for at least six years. And the 2011-2012 boys head basketball coach was let go in mid-season.

"We were looking forward to working on a change," Hobbs said.

If White is cleared of charges, he may begin teaching his physical education and health classes. Then, he may be assigned as an assistant basketball coach, Hobbs said.

Martin White, Scott White's father, has been a volunteer-substitute teacher in White's classes since the beginning of the school year, since charges were filed the first day of teacher's meetings Aug. 13.

Martin White is a retired teacher, coach, principal and superintendent. He commutes from Richland, where he retired as superintendent.

"He is definitely qualified to be a substitute," Hobbs said.

Martin White's donation of time has saved the district $70 per day, which it would have paid to a substitute in addition to administrative leave.

Scott White, 41, has been charged in Barry County with four counts of first-degree statutory rape by having sexual intercourse with a child under 14, while teaching and coaching at Exeter R-6 School District more than a year ago.
