Jungmeyer places seventh at State Golf Championships

October 23rd, 2012 in News

Russellville freshman Mikala Jungmeyer and junior Kelsey Schrimpf competed at the 2012 Class 1 State Golf Championships Oct. 15-16 at Meadow Lake Acres Country Club, New Bloomfield, where Jungmeyer came away with All-State honors as she finished tied for seventh place with 166.

"Being an All-State medalist was Mikalas's goal for this year," Russellville Coach Gayla Spencer said. "She worked hard to achieve this goal. She overcame a knee injury, and her play really peaked when the competition was toughest. She is very serious about her golf, and I am proud to be her coach."

Jungmeyer shot an 81 on the first day of competition, and an 85 on day two.

Schrimpf shot a 93 on the first day, and an 86 on the second, to finish in 18th place with 179.

"Having two players qualify for state is the highlight of our first-year high school girls golf program," Spencer said. "Kelsey and Mikala have spent many years preparing for this special event. They both play in other venues outside of the high school golf arena. Playing summer golf is instrumental in competing at the highest level. I'm very proud of both of these girls and their performance in a highly stressful situation, and pleased to think they can compete at this level again next year."

Westminster's Brooke Cusumano won her second straight individual title with 154. Westminster

won the team title as well, with 669. Villa Duchesne finished second with 721.

Looking back at the 2012 season, Spencer said, "To have five members on a girls golf team from a small school district is a fantastic credit to this sport and school. These girls are involved in other sports and organizations and were still able to achieve their goals and compete at a high level. We competed against some much larger schools from our area, and were able to play on several really nice courses. I would like to thank Eldon Country Club for allowing us to use their facilities as our home course for our practices and meets."
