One re-elected school board member and one new member were sworn in at the California R-I School Board meeting Thursday, April 11.
Incumbent Kyle Wirts and new member Rhonda (Kirchoff) Meyer were sworn in late during the meeting. In a reorganization of the board, Steven Burger was elected president; Jay VanDieren, vice president; Kyle Wirts, treasurer; and Susie Oliver, secretary.
Julie Bailey recognized those contributing to the archery program. Present were Michael Rex of Moreau Valley Quail Forever, Eric Edwards of the Missouri Department of Conservation and Russell Clennin of California Shooters Club. Brian Hill of Moniteau Monarchs Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation was unable to make it.
Resignations accepted by the board were from para-professionals Erica Battke and Darrell Everett and maintenance personnel Gary Howard and Keith Reed. Heather Henley resigned from coaching middle school volleyball.
Pam Brauner presented information on students designated as "homeless" by the school. She reported 14 students designated "homeless" under state requirements. Some of the students designated homeless may not be what would ordinarily be considered homeless, but since they meet certain state guidelines, they are listed as homeless. For more information, contact the school district.
The preschool committee was discussed briefly. The minimum number for the preschool program for full funding is 12 students, half required to be I.E.P. (Individualized Education Program) students in the special education category. Any fewer, the funds would be pro-rated.
The health insurance costs were again discussed. Superintendent Dwight Sanders verified the individual costs will increase by about $50 a month.
Elementary Principal Daniel Williams reported 589 students enrolled. Middle School Principal Matt Abernathy reported 295 students enrolled and High School Principal Mike Hight reported an enrollment of 387.
Williams reported a good turnout at the student-led conferences March 19. More than 85 percent of the parents and students attended the function. The remaining parents were contacted personally by each classroom teacher.
The next board meeting is Monday, May 13, at 6 p.m.
