On Monday, Aug. 5, California Mayor Norris Gerhart announced the selection of Michael Ward to fill the position of police chief of the city. Gerhart made the announcement to the police department after calling in all officers on and off duty.
He will begin work in his new position in a few weeks.
Ward has been employed by the Moniteau County Sheriff's Department for about two years. He has about 16 years experience in law enforcement, much of it with the Cole County Sheriff's Department.
The selection was made from a total of 17 applicants. Ward was one of four who were selected for interviews.
The City of California Board of Aldermen approved Ward for the position at a special meeting Wednesday, July 31, with the information made public Monday morning.
Police Chief Fred Kirchoff announced his retirement several months ago.
