An Eagle Scout project came to fruition just in time for Flag Day, June 14, as Allan Burger with assistance from several others placed two flags each in brackets on 13 of the period light poles in California the evening of June 13. Burger will now go before a board of review for consideration of an Eagle Scout Badge, which is scouting's highest honor.

The poles chosen for placement are in front of the California City Hall and around the Moniteau County Courthouse.

Since they are placed on the period lights, and flag etiquette requires a flag to be illuminated at night, the two three-by-five foot flags on each pole are mounted for permanent display.

Burger proposed the project to the Lions Club about a year ago, since the club is known for its program of placing flags at participating businesses on major holidays. There are currently more than 100 businesses, churches and organizations participating. The Lions Club is also a primary sponsor of local Eagle Scout projects.

Others assisted in different phases of the project. Alan Scheidt assisted in fabrication of the flag brackets. Barry and Sandy Crawford assited in designing the poles and provided metal product and shop equipment for building them. Pro Powder Coating, Russellville, painted them, donating the services. Dan and Pat Sweet provided the mounting hardware and polyester flags at cost.

The E.M. Burger Foundation provided financial support, assisting in covering the project costs. The Lions Club will support the future maintenance and flag replacement. d
