Red Cross holding water safety instructor course

The American Red Cross Heart of Missouri Chapter will be holding a water safety instructor course in May at two locations in Columbia.

The course will be held in three sessions: from 5-10 p.m., Friday May 10 at the Columbia branch office, 1805 W. Worley St.; and 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday May 11 and 12; and 9 a.m.-6 p.m.Saturday and Sunday May 18 and 19, at the University of Missouri Rec Center.

The course costs $350 and includes FIT, instructor materials and training fees.

Participants must be at least 16 years old, complete a pre-course swim test, attend all class sessions and successfully complete in-class sessions and a final exam.

The pre-course swim skills test is consistent with Level 4 of the Stroke Performance Charts. The skills tests includes: swimming 25 yards each of the front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke and 15 yards of the butterfly; maintain position on back for one minute in deep water (floating or sculling); and treading water for one minute.

A photo ID is required for admission to the Rec Center.

The class maximum is 10.
