The Jamestown varsity baseball team faced the #3 seeded Calvary Lutheran Lions Saturday in the first round of the Class 1 District 10 Tournament at New Franklin, where the #6 seeded Eagles captured a 4-3 win.
"I'm very pleased with how the boys played the whole game," Jamestown Coach E.H. Hirschvogel said. "The defense was strong for the most part, although we did have a couple of errors that allowed a couple of runs to score in the fifth inning."
The Lions led 1-0 after the first inning, however, Jamestown got into the scoring action in the fourth inning when Kellan Flippin's single drove two runs home to put the Eagles on top 2-1.
Calvary Lutheran added two runs in the fifth to lead 3-2.
Alex Gerlach ripped a double to drive two runs home in the sixth inning and put the Eagles on top 4-3. Jamestown held Calvary Lutheran scoreless in the seventh inning to secure the win, 4-3.
Colton DeVore recorded the win with three strikeouts and only two walks.
"I thought Colton stayed pretty sharp on the mound most of the game," Hirschvogel said. "And Matt (Hendrickson) caught a good game behind the plate."
Alex Gerlach led Jamestown hits with a double and two RBI. Hendrickson had three singles and Flippin had a single and two RBI. Ethan Hunziker and Isaac Duncan each contributed a double. Evan Knierim had two singles, while Andrew Hardwick and Josh Clevenger each had a single.
"The guys had a great attitude going into the game, and stayed focused throughout," Hirschvogel said. "I was proud of the effort."
Jamestown played #2 seeded New Franklin Monday night in the semifinal round, where the Eagles lost 10-0.
Jamestown ends the season 3-6.
In the other semifinal game Monday night at the district tourney, top-seeded Pilot Grove defeated #4 seeded Bunceton 6-3. Pilot Grove will play New Franklin for the championship at 6 p.m. today (Wednesday).
