Felony firearm possession charge filed

An arrest for Class C Felony Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a felon was made on May 1 after a tip led to a search of a residence near California.

John C. Smith, 36, was charged on May 2 with the felony of unlawful firearm possession.

According to court documents, a person reported to officers that Smith had a felony conviction in the past and had a handgun and a rifle somewhere in the residence. A search warrant was obtained, but Smith arrived at the residence and cooperated with the officers, pointing out the location of a locked-up handgun and a rifle.

If convicted on this unlawful possession charge, the defendant could face up to seven years in prison and a $5,000 fine. Bond was set at $10,000
