The California Police Department will soon begin Project Night Eyes. The new business watch program begins Dec. 1. Starting on that date, merchants entering their businesses in the morning may find a card placed under the door. The card indicates the business was checked during the hours it was closed.
Chief Mike Ward of the California Police Department advises that the concept of the "Project Night Eyes" program is to assist business owners and merchants in maintaining the afterhours security of their facilities during the late nighttime periods. Through unscheduled, random and periodic police checks of businesses, California Police Officers are able to help keep most businesses from vandalism, theft and burglary.
Officers will check local businesses and then fill out a Project Night Eyes card, sliding it under the door of the business to let the merchant know of the business check. Chief Ward advises that this program will help form a more solvent partnership between the police department and the businesses they serve.
Although the program is designed to help businesses keep their buildings secure, it is not meant to be a replacement for existting security features or alarm systems. Chief Ward asks business owners to continue to be diligent in ensuring their businesses are locked up and secure prior to leaving. Business owners should also be aware that not every business will get checked every night. These checks will be random and unscheduled as to not develop a routine for the "Bad Guys" to memorize.
