Winter storm moves across Missouri

A winter storm will continue to move across the region overnight.

Snow accumulations of 6 to 8 inches are forecast for parts of central and northeast Missouri and west central Illinois, with accumulations of 3-5 inches expected elsewhere.

Snow is forecast for Mid-Missouri tonight, mainly before 1 a.m. Tonight's low will be around 14 with northeast wind at 7 to 11 mph becoming northwest after midnight. The chance of precipitation is 90%, with total nighttime snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Wednesday will see cloudy skies and cold temperatures, with a high near 19 and northwest wind at 11 to 14 mph.

The National Weather Service has issued the following statement for the Jefferson City and Mid-Missouri area:

...WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM CST WEDNESDAY...

  • TIMING... SNOW WILL CONTINUE TO BE MODERATE TO HEAVY AT TIMES THROUGH EARLY THIS EVENING BEFORE ENDING OVERNIGHT.
  • ACCUMULATIONS... 5 TO 10 INCHES OF SNOW.
  • WINDS... NORTH 10 TO 15 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 20 MPH.
  • IMPACTS... RAPID ACCUMULATIONS OF SNOW WILL MAKE FOR HAZARDOUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS... AND SOME BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW WILL BE POSSIBLE TONIGHT.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER STORM WARNING MEANS THAT 6 INCHES OR MORE OF SNOW IS EXPECTED. THE RAPID ACCUMULATION OF SNOW WILL MAKE TRAVEL EXTREMELY DIFFICULT... IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE. IF TRAVEL IS NECESSARY... MAKE SURE TO EXERCISE CAUTION. BEGIN YOUR TRAVEL WITH A TANK FULL OF GAS... AND CARRY A WINTER STORM KIT WHICH INCLUDES A SHOVEL... FLASHLIGHT... CELLPHONE... AND BLANKETS OF EXTRA WARM CLOTHING.
