California Stingrays start off 2014 season with home meet

The California Stingrays opened the 2014 season with a home meet June 4 at the California Pool, hosting the Boonville Blue Marlins, Centralia Hurricanes, Fulton Fins and Westlake Tridents.

"We have a great group of returning swimmers," California Coach Jamie Johnston said. "We also have several new swimmers this year, and a few who are already close to breaking records. The 7-8 girls' 25 meter freestyle record was broken at our June 4 meet by Isabella Kincaid with a time of 18.83. That record was previously held by Sydney Deeken in 2004. Our kids are working hard and we are excited for a great season."

California Stingrays who finished in the top four of their event at the June 4 meet at California are as follows. In the Mixed 8 and Under 100 Meter Freestyle Relay event, the team of Ella Bailey, Isabella Kincaid, Kwynn Duvall and Kierstyn Lawson placed second with 1:57.81; Girls 8 and Under 100 Meter Freestyle Relay, the team of Mari Miller, Audra Whittle, Isabelle Rohrbach and Zoe Street placed second, 2:38.72; Mixed 9-10 100 Meter Freestyle Relay, the team of Peter Dampf, Eli Dunnaway, Enoch Dunnaway and Will Pickering placed second, 1:36.62; Girls 9-10 100 Meter Freestyle Relay, the team of Abby Trachsel, Kayle Menhennet, Elizabeth Turner and Madison McCord placed second, 1:23.66.

In the Mixed 11-13 200 Meter Freestyle Relay, the team of Garrett Burger, Jaley Flippin, Brooklyn VanLoo and Nathan Pickering placed second with 2:34.91; Girls 11-13 200 Meter Freestyle Relay, the team of Megan VanLoo, Kaitlyn Stauffer, Zoe Edwards and Zoe Zimmerman placed fourth, 2:53.24; Mixed 14-18 200 Meter Freestyle Relay, the team of Ellie Wirts, Sarah McCord, Kaylee VanLoo and Luke Burger placed third, 2:21.53.

In the Girls 13-14 100 Meter Individual Medley (IM), Jaley Flippin placed second with 1:39.94; Boys 6 and Under 25 Meter Backstroke, Jaxon Scrivner third, 55.07; Girls 6 and Under 25 Meter Backstroke, Audra Whittle third, 46.03; Boys 7-8 25 Meter Backstroke, Gavin Porter second, 27.47, and Will Edwards third, 34.72; Girls 7-8 25 Meter Backstroke, Kierstyn Lawson second, 28.00, and Zoe Street fourth, 29.42; Boys 9-10 25 Meter Backstroke, Will Pickering third, 23.19; Girls 9-10 25 Meter Backstroke, Elizabeth Turner fourth, 22.94.

In the Boys 9-10 25 Meter Breaststroke, Will Pickering placed first with 27.80, and Enoch Dunnaway second, 29.03; Boys 13-14 50 Meter Breaststroke, Jack Johnston second, 44.16, and Nathan Pickering fourth, 48.00; Girls 13-14 50 Meter Breaststroke, Brooklyn VanLoo first, 47.34, and Jaley Flippin second, 48.09; Women 15-18 50 Meter Breaststroke, Audrey Pickering second, 46.57.

In the Mixed 8 and Under 100 Meter Medley Relay, the team of Mari Miller, Kierstyn Lawson, Isabella Kincaid and Kwynn Duvall placed first with 2:25.62; Mixed 9-10 100 Meter Medley Relay, the team of Eli Dunnaway, Will Pickering, Enoch Dunnaway and Peter Dampf placed second, 2:01.71; Girls 9-10 100 Meter Medley Relay, the team of Madison McCord, Elizabeth Turner, Abby Trachsel and Kaylee Menhennet placed second, 1:42.38, and the team of Kyla Combs, Gabrielle Rohrbach, Megan Arnold and Mabree Cooper third, 2:28.50.

In the Mixed 11-13 200 Meter Medley Relay, they sam of Garrett Burger, Jaley Flippin, Nathan Pickering and Brooklyn VanLoo placed second with 2:57.75; Girls 11-13 200 Meter Medley Relay, the team of Alyssa Sabartinelli, Zoe Zimmerman, Megan VanLoo and Kaitlyn Stauffer placed first, 3:18.62; and Mixed 14-18 200 Meter Medley Relay, the team of Ellie Wirts, Audrey Pickering, Kaylee VanLoo and Luke Burger placed first, 2:35.84.

The Stingrays participated in a meet at Jefferson City June 6, just two days after California's season opener, where Boonville, Centralia, the Eldon Dolphins, Mexico Marlins and Sedalia Bandits were the other competing teams from the Mid-Missouri Swim Conference.

"All of the kids were really excited to start the season and they did a great job at our first two meets," California Coach Audrey Imhoff said. "They worked really hard and I can't wait to see what the rest of the season holds for our swimmers."

Stingrays who finished in the top four of their event at the Jefferson City meet are as follows. In the Mixed 8 and Under Freestyle Relay, the team of Ella Bailey, Mari Miller, Kwynn Duvall and Kierstyn Lawon placed first with 1:56.49; in the Mixed 9-10 100 Yard Freestyle Relay, the team of Madison McCord, Eli Dunnaway, Enoch Dunnaway and Will Pickering placed first with 1:13.20; Mixed 11-13 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, the team of Garrett Burger, Brooklyn VanLoo, Tyler Johnston and Nathan Pickering placed second, 2:21.24; Girls 11-13 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, team of Megan VanLoo, Kaitlyn Stauffer, Zoe Edwards and Zoe Zimmerman placed third, 2:37.94.

In the Girls 7-8 25 Yard Backstroke, Kierstyn Lawson placed second with 24.54; Boys 9-10 25 Yard Backstroke, Will Pickering third, 21.50; Girls 9-10 25 Yard Backstroke, Elizabeth Turner third, 22.68; Boys 11-12 50 Yard Backstroke, Tyler Johnston fourth, 44.44; Boys 11-12 50 Yard Freestyle, Tyler Johnston fourth, 34.52; Boys 13-14 50 Yard Freestyle, Nathan Pickering fourth, 30.81.

In the Men 15-18 50 Yard Freestyle, Luke Burger placed first with 25.59; Boys 100 Yard Backstroke, Jack Johnston fourth, 1:28.83; Men 15-18 50 Yard Butterfly, Luke Burger second, 27.67; Women 15-18, Kaylee VanLoo fourth, 35.25.

In the Girls 7-8 25 Yard Breaststroke, Kierstyn Lawson placed fourth with 31.91; Boys 9-10 25 Yard Breaststroke, Will Pickering second, 24.47; Girls 9-10 25 Yard Breaststroke, Elizabeth Turner fourth, 25.42; Boys 13-14 50 Yard Breaststroke, Jack Johnston third, 38.46; Girls 13-14 50 Yard Breaststroke, Brooklyn VanLoo third, 39.46.

In the Mixed 8 and Under 100 Yard Medley Relay, the team of Kwynn Duvall, Kierstyn Lawson, Mari Miller and Zoe Street placed first with 2:17.08; Mixed 9-10 100 Yard Medley Relay, the team of DJ Schneider, Elizabeth Turner, Madison McCord and Kaylee Menhennet placed second, 1:43.86; Mixed 11-13 200 Yard Medley Relay, the team of Garrett Burger, Tyler Johnston, Nathan Pickering and Brooklyn VanLoo placed first, 2:32.99; Girls 11-13 200 Yard Medley Relay, the team of Alyssa Sabartinelli, Zoe Zimmerman, Megan VanLoo and Kaitlyn Stauffer placed second, 2:56.80; and Mixed 14-18 200 Yard Medley Relay, the team of Sarah McCord, Jack Johnston, Kaylee VanLoo and Luke Burger placed first, 2:22.81.

The Stingrays will host Eldon and Sedalia tonight (Wednesday) at the California Pool.

Wednesday, July 2, the Stingrays will compete at the Fulton swim meet.
