Jim Deeken has been selected as the new California Parks and Recreation Director. According to City Clerk Brian Scrivner, Deeken was called with the decision about 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26. He was in the new office in the California City Hall about 15 minutes later, getting information for applications and coaches for the Summer Rec. Soccer Program. The six week program begins in a few weeks and runs through the end of October.

He expects to be kept busy, since youth basketball -kindergarten through grade six - then baseball and softball. And of course, the swimming pool must be kept operational and the different swimming and water aerobics programs organized and supervised. To that end, he plans to work on WSI (Water Safety Instructor) Certification.

"I'm excited to be in the position and am looking forward to working with the program and trying to expand the offerings," Deeken said.

Deeken has many years experience coaching a variety of sports. In addition, he is a retired teacher and school administrator. That experience provides him with a background for organizing and supervising the California Rec. activities, events and programs.
