A man accused of shooting and killing his son-in-law at a residence in California is set to appear in court Tuesday. Donald Bateman, 68, was taken into custody and has been charged with first degree murder in the death of Antoine Johnson, 43.

City of California Police Officers responding to a disturbance at a duplex on West Main Street, California, Wednesday, Sept. 3, about 8:30 p.m. found Johnson inside the residence with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was transported to St. Mary's Health Center, where he later died from his wounds.

Bateman was reported found in the room with a .38 caliber pistol in his lap. A double-amputee in a wheelchair, Bateman was taken into custody at the residence. At his arraignment in Moniteau County Court on Tuesday, Sept. 9, on a Class A Felony charge of first degree murder, Bateman was ordered to return with counsel on Tuesday, Sept. 23.

The officers were told by a witness that Bateman had been drinking before the incident. While the two were working on a water heater, an argument between the two ended with Bateman shooting Johnson twice.

Bateman is reported to have told police that Johnson had threatened to beat him. When he came back into the room with a gun, Bateman said Johnson rushed him and he fired at Johnson.

A neighbor, who was not at home at the time of the incident, said the two men had been in residence less than two months, were from the St. Louis area.

The duplex is owned by someone who resides in California state.
