Jury finds Jefferson City man guilty in car theft

A Cole County jury has found a Jefferson City man guilty of charges in connection with taking a vehicle without the permission of its owner in October 2016.

Corey Boston, 22, is charged with first-degree tampering and misdemeanor receiving stolen property. He will be sentenced in July.

The vehicle was taken in the 700 block of Madison Street, according to a Jefferson City Police Department. Boston took the vehicle keys while talking with the victim, who had set them on a counter.

The vehicle was found unoccupied at a residence Boston frequented in the 600 block of Locust Street. When he was arrested, Boston was found to be in possession of items that were in the vehicle at the time it was taken.

Boston is also charged with committing a robbery prior to this incident. In that case, Boston is charged with second-degree robbery, first-degree tampering and fraudulent use of a credit device. This case will be reviewed at the time of Boston's tampering sentence in July.

The robbery occurred in the 300 block of East Dunklin Street.

Police said the victim told authorities Boston had contacted him for a ride and the victim agreed to do so.

As they were going along, there was an apparent disagreement, and Boston forcibly stopped the vehicle in the 400 block of East Dunklin Street. It was there the victim was assaulted and thrown out of his car, and Boston drove off with the victim's cellphone and wallet inside the vehicle.

The vehicle was located about an hour later in the 600 block of Linn Street.

Boston admitted to being in the car with the victim but denied taking the car. He also claimed the victim let him borrow a debit card, which authorities said Boston used to purchase items.
