Jefferson City's Main Post Office at 133 W. High St. will hold its first Passport Fair of 2018 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.

The goal is to help travelers prepare for international trips, the U.S. Postal Service said in a news release.

As many families make plans for trips this summer, Postmaster Krystal Drone said in the news release, "if those plans involve travel abroad, this is the perfect opportunity to get that necessary passport."

Applicants must apply in person, so the Post Office created the Saturday event to allow many customers, especially families with children, an opportunity to submit their applications more conveniently.

The Post Office services include taking passport photos, so the application process can be completed in one visit.

Applicants must provide the Form DS-11 passport application available at the Post Office or downloaded from the USPS website, usps.com/passport and filled out beforehand.

Applicants, including infants, must present a proof of U.S. citizenship, such as:

A previous U.S. passport

A certified birth certificate issued by a city, county or state

A consular report of birth abroad

A certification of birth

A naturalization certificate, or a certificate of citizenship.

A photo ID, such as a driver's license, also is required.

Information is available from the U.S. State Department at travel.state.gov/passport.

It usually takes at least two months for the government to process the application, so people should apply as early as possible to avoid extra costs involved in expediting the application.

Passport books - good for travel anywhere in the world - and passport cards, which are limited to use in parts of the Western Hemisphere, are available.

Information on cost and how to apply for a passport book and/or card can be found at usps.com/passport or travel.state.gov.

U.S. citizens also may obtain passport information by calling the National Passport Information Center toll-free at 877-487-2778.
